Saad Zaghloul

A quick blast from the past courtesy of the MEI Editor’s blog:

Two videos of Saad Zaghloul’s return to Egypt in 1923 following his exile in the Seychelles (!) . Zaghloul was a nationalist hero of Egypt who fought the Britiah occupation in the early 20th century; he returned after the revolution in 1919 and became Prime Minister, although led the country for less than a year before resigning and dying soon after. The Wafd still love him (he founded the party). I remember walking past his statue a few times in Cairo. Also, if and when the Mr and Mrs Mahmoud Khalil museum in Dokki reopens, there is an excellent collection of cartoons of him on display somewhere on the ground floor.
